Paula Temple
A NEW BREED OF
DJ
Detroit, Chicago, Berlin, Sheffield, London these are
cities synonymous with the new sounds of the past. Bradford? It doesn't
quite have the same cache, yet it is Bradford that will forever be linked with
the next generation of sound. The MxF8 or Midi Xfader will sweep in a new
breed of DJ. Bradford inventor Gerard Campbell has dedicated his life to
music or to be more exact to the techniques of noise creation. He calls
himself a 'noise-icion' and whilst he dallied in the past with gigging himself,
playing with such cult luminaries as The New York Dolls, he realised that
his future lay in using technology to help others create sounds. His first
invention, the Notron found favour with eclectic, creative people such as Richie
Hawtin, LFO and even Bjork. His latest invention the MxF8, has taken 3 years to
come to fruition and Gerard decided that since the creation was for the
DJ's, why not get them to help bring it to life? Many agreed and so the MxF8 was
born.
One person who has been instrumental in the development
of the machine is DJ Paula Temple. Paula has an impressive pedigree;
accomplished and award winning DJ with an underground following in the UK and
Europe; top radio presenter and producer with her show Virtual Future Music
which reaches a regular, loyal fan-base world-wide; no stranger to Radio 1
appearing on the respected One World show with her 2 hour future mix and
receiving strong support from John Peel; she set up the Unis1 record label with
Chris McCormack and her first EP won rave reviews and is the peak feature
in the sets of Jeff Mills, Claude Young, Technasia, Adam Beyer and Dave
Clarke.
Now add to that impressive list - MxF8 pioneer.
Technology is at the heart of techno and a good DJ effectively exploits the
technology at their fingertips. Even the greatest DJ is limited by one
biological feature - just 1 pair of hands, limiting their skill and prowess to 2
or 3 records and split second changes. The best overcome this limitation and
with experience comes proficiency at the decks. The MxF8 offers the DJ 4 pairs
of hands, 8 records, no decks.
Paula Temple debuted the new hardware at Superconductor
in Leeds in front of an enthusiastic if a little bemused audience. Using skills
learnt as a DJ she expertly showcased the potential of the MxF8.
Dan Moore from Superconductor
said: 'It was a breathtaking Live/DJ set from Paula Temple as she
debuted the MXF8 live at Superconductor. For many it was quite hard to
comprehend what exactly this machine could do but the effects were certainly devastating.' Paula believes that the MxF8
will radically change the DJ scene. She says; 'The MxF8
does not replace the decks. I did a combination set using both and I was really
excited by the results. I love using decks, but the MxF8 added a new dimension.
I found that I could use the machine intuitively and the freedom of having 8
tracks at one time to use meant that I could try all sorts of new approaches and
I could see the crowd were as excited as I was. I love the fact that I could use
a few seconds of unusual tracks and witnessing the impact of the new combination
of multi-tracks was amazing.'
Paula Temple 'Mind and Machine'
tour starts November 2003.
