Need some new phones and monitors.

Let the geek in you free, you can never have too much kit and there's always someone who knows more than you, use this area to prove it.

Need some new phones and monitors.

Postby mezerik » Wed Feb 03, 2010 8:49 pm

What do people make of these for the price. The phones need to be good for DJing and producing as I haven't the space to always have monitors set up. I just use monitors for the final mixing down and tweaking.

Also I blew (well my 2 year old poked his finger into the cone  ) on my monitors. One is FUBAR.

Need some decent monitors, have about £200 to spend, maybe £250.

I've come across these, what do people make of them

Any advice?

Both look good.
Never seen A&H cans before, I'm sure they're great, though how they stack up against others - for that price - would make me investigate more options.
They're probably pretty good for production, considering A&H's legacy.

I'd go for KRK Monitors.

I've got an old pair of Rokit 5's & people always comment how great they sound. I'm talking friends in general not my studio geek mates.

Cheers for the info. I'm torn between the Alesis and KRK monitors now. Both are equally priced and specs sound decent.

Anyone else wanna throw any suggestions into the mix?

the headphones question is a bit of a tricky one ,most headphones for dj'n are not usually best suited for music production ,all the headphones i've used for dj'n coloured the sound quite heavily and wouldn't been much use in the studio....I currently use sonys for dj'n ,they pump the bass a bit ,and for the nick my ears are in this tends to help me ,however the best ones i've used were beyer dynamics,a really nice sound and great build quality, very comfortable ,i'd have bought them instead of the sonys but they didnt have em in the shop (and i was in a hurry to get a new pair),i dont use headphones for production ,so i cant help you there

oh and +1 on the krk's ,not the greatest ever or owt ,but for the money they will do a nice job

What do you make of these. Not much as far as spec on the site except for a blurb.

they look alright for the money, but looks dont count for much with monitors ,here is a bit more info on them http://www.acousticfingerstyle.com/MackieMR5MR8.htm ,go in with some music you know well and test them all out ,its the only way to be sure of what you are getting

,mackie like behringer are a brand i've always stayed well clear off ,every shit studio i've ever been in always has some noisy ,hissing broken mackie mixer or behringer crap in it ,thats not to say everything they make is shit (but it probably is  )

Harsh review, I've always considered mackie to be well above behringer in terms of quality control.. Not to mention tons of the old techno records where put together on mackie desks. + I have a mackie desk hence the hasty defence...hehe... It's a good little mixer with tons of routing options for its price range.

A friend of mine has the MR8s and they certainly have a lot of detail and tons of power, hard to really judge them though as the room wasn't set up right for em at all.

 @ dirtymac

I always regarded Mackie to be a good product.

Behringer on the other hand I regard to be the fisher price of audio equipment.

Will have to go and check out some in the flesh and take some basic channel records down to test them with.

Definitely gonna get the Allen & Heath phones as I have a Xone 62 and am a bit of an Allen & Heath fan.

As for monitors, think i'm gonna wait until I get chance to go check some out as I don't fancy buying some on the net then finding them to be rubbish.

I do fancy those Alesis ones though, do people regard them as a decent brand or would you put them in the same category as Behringer (shite)

Decided to get some of these as I already have a decent amp so instead of getting active within my price range i have gone for higher spec but passive monitors.

Tanoy Reveal 6

Got the Allen & Heath Xone headphones and they are pretty good, they look a bit like SONY MDR-V700DJ phones (which I have had before) but hopefully the build is better as they used to snap for fun, i broke a few pairs in my time and not all were mine. That was when they were £120 a pop too. They have come down in price now though. The Allen & Heath were £125.

Looking forward to getting my delivery of monitors any time soon and banging out a set and finishing off some tracks. Think I will do an ableton/vinyl combo set with some loops I have made and some live midi on the fly with the D16 Drumazon and Phoscyon plugins, get some 909 and 303 acid going over some records and see how it comes out. Need to get some patterns programmed and some nice presets ready for the jam.

My boy uses those reveals, you won't be disappointed. Don't push them too hard though, they can reproduce a nice low end as long as you don't over push them.
